Understanding the Wali
The wali system is built into NikaahSA — not an afterthought. Here is everything you need to know, including guidance for reverts seeking marriage.

A wali is a male Muslim guardian who represents a woman in the nikah process. The majority of scholars hold this to be a condition for a valid marriage. No wali available? Visit your local masjid and speak to the imam — they assist regularly and will guide you with kindness, in shaa Allah.

📌If your family are non-Muslim, they cannot act as your wali for the nikah itself. This is the scholarly consensus.
👨‍👩‍👧However, your male relatives can assist — getting to know the brother, asking questions on your behalf. They cannot perform the nikah but play a valuable protective role. You will still need to appoint a Muslim male as wali for the nikah.
